Sara was interested in getting her degree in sociology, but living far from a campus and raising three children made doing so a challenge.

That all changed thanks to UWM online degree program. She graduated with her bachelor’s in sociology in December 2017.

“I am a stay-at-home mom, so I did not think that going to a traditional campus would work for me,” says Sara, who lives in Verona, Wisconsin. “I knew I wanted to graduate from college before my kids, and I had my husband’s full support to go back, so an online degree was my best option.”

She attended Carroll University from 2000-2002, starting as chemistry major, but she developed a passion for sociology after her first class. “I loved learning about the way people interact with different groups and organizations,” she says.

Her husband, Shane, had earned his Bachelor of Business Administration in management information systems, and he encouraged her to look at UWM’s online program. Shane and Sara have three children, ages 12, 9 and 7.

“UWM had the degree I wanted and also accepted my previous college credits from years ago,” Sara says. “I like that I had a regular advisor just like any traditional student would. That was pivotal for me completing my degree in a streamlined timeframe.”

She’s now looking at options for full or part-time work or possibly attending graduate school.

“I’m lucky that I have some time to look for a position that allows me to really use my degree,” Sara says.
