Why use 2015 tax information?

As of October, most people required to file taxes will have already done so for 2015. This means most filers can link directly to the IRS and use the Data Retrieval Tool (DRT). The DRT takes the guesswork out of transferring your information from your tax return to the FAFSA. It also lets the Financial Aid office know the information is the most accurate it can be.

  • *UPDATE 3/14/2017: The IRS has issued a statement indicating the tool may be unavailable for several weeks. If you have not already submitted your FAFSA, you will have to manually complete the income information section. Pay careful attention during this process and use 2015 tax year information ONLY!
What is the benefit of filing early?

Filing now means no mad dash in August to get everything completed. You’ll also be on campus in case you need to ask our office any questions .

When will I be offered financial aid for 2017-18?

Awarding has already started for the new Panthers-to-be! If you’ll be starting at UWM in Fall 2017 and have already submitted your FAFSA, check your e-mails for an award notification from us!

If you have already submitted your FAFSA but have not gotten an award notification, be sure there is nothing on your PAWS to-do list! If you’ve been admitted, you have submitted your FAFSA, and there is nothing on your to-do list, all that’s left is to be patient! We are working to award as many new Panthers as possible over the next few weeks.

Current Panthers! Don’t think we have forgotten about you! Since financial aid is based on your academic performance and how much you have borrowed so far, you’re award packages for next year get a little trickier. We hope to have awards out to you June 2017!

How will that impact my 2016-17 financial aid?

If you’re a current student getting financial aid at UWM, you’ve probably already submitted your FAFSA with 2015 federal tax information on it. You might have also already received an e-mail from our office asking that you make sure that your current FAFSA is correct.  If the income information you used for 2016-17 is different from what you report for 2017-18, you may have to go back and make changes which could affect your aid eligibility.
