Application Process & Promissory Notes

All students and parents borrowing for the first-time must complete a master promissory note (MPN) before loan funds can disburse. A master promissory note is completed online and can be used to make multiple disbursements for up to ten years. By signing the MPN, you agree to repay the loan under the terms of the program.

Federal Direct Loan

  • Complete the MPN for Federal Direct Subsidized and Unsubsidized loans online at studentloans.gov. Both loans will use the same MPN.
    • Log in using your FSA ID.
    • Select Complete Loan Agreement (Master Promissory Note)
    • Select Start for MPN for Subsidized/Unsubsidized Loans

  • Apply for a PLUS Loan online at studentloans.gov.

      • You will need to request a Parent PLUS loan each academic year or semester if you choose not to apply for the full year. You are strongly encouraged to apply for the entire academic year.
    • Enter required information. Be sure to provide student information under student section and parent information under the borrower information section.

During the application process, you will be asked to indicate how much you intend to borrow. You have the option of selecting: the maximum amount you are eligible for, a specific amount, or an unknown amount. If you indicate an unknown amount, the loan will be processed for the maximum amount. The maximum amount will be the difference between the student’s Estimated Cost of Attendance and any aid they are receiving.

A PLUS MPN for a loan without an endorser is valid for up to 10 years from the original signature date. When an endorser is needed, a borrower must complete a new PLUS MPN for each loan.  In addition, the endorser needs to complete an addendum.

  • Select Endorsers can Complete an Electronic Endorser Addendum at studentloans.gov. They will need an FSA ID to complete the Addendum electronically.  Otherwise, they can Print Endorser Addendum.

To confirm the PLUS application and MPN have been completed, go to studentloans.gov and select completed MPNS and completed PLUS requests.

Perkins and Nursing Loan

Students who are offered and accept a Federal Perkins and/or Nursing Loan for the first time, will need to complete a Perkins or Nursing Master Promissory Note (MPN). In addition, Nursing Loan borrowers must complete a MPN each time a new loan is offered. Review additional information and instructions by selecting the individual link for this program under the Award Column on your PAWS account.

Promissory notes must be completed within 30 days or the loan will be canceled.

The Perkins loan is scheduled to be eliminated as of October 1, 2017.
