Dr. Kovach joined the University of Milwaukee faculty in 2001. Dr. Kovach’s research seeks to alleviate the range of human suffering that comes in the context of dementia. Specifically, she has been responsible for: 1) opening and researching some of the first palliative care households designed to care for people with late-stage dementia; 2) developing the Serial Trial Intervention, an approach to management of pain and other unmet needs in people with advanced dementia who no longer clearly or consistently verbalize needs; and c) developing theory, the “Model of Imbalance in Sensoristasis,” to guide research and practice on activity pacing of people with dementia. She has over 100 publications. Agencies funding her research have included the National Institutes for Health, Administration on Aging, Health Resources and Services Administration, and Helen Bader Foundation. Her research methods are quantitative with specific expertise in randomized controlled trials, developing and testing multicomponent health care interventions, clinical decision support interventions, quantitative observational measurement, actigraphy, and cortisol circadian rhythm.

Dr. Kovach was named Editor for the Journal Research in Gerontological Nursing in October, 2011. She also serves as an Editorial Board Member for the American Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease and Other Dementias. Her book Late-Stage Dementia Care: A Basic Guide is published by Taylor & Francis Publishing. She is a fellow in the American Academy of Nursing and the Gerontological Society of America.
