We strongly encourage students to have insurance to cover health care expenses that occur outside of our services available on campus. If you have an emergency while you are away, a health or mental health care need when we are closed, or need an X-ray or to see a specialist it is important to be able to access the services that you need. In a recent survey of UWM students only 55% were covered through their parent’s insurance so we realize that many students are trying to navigate their options.
Here are a few opportunities to help you:
- Stop by UWM’s Student Health Insurance Enrollment info table on Dec. 7, located in the UWM Union, 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Ask questions and get information about signing up for affordable, flexible health insurance.
- To review your coverage options in detail, visit healthcare.gov to look at federal programs. Sign-up deadline is Dec. 15, 2016, to receive coverage effective Jan. 1, 2017. Visit access.gov for local options including BadgerCare+.
- To receive free, in-person enrollment help with certified application counselors and healthcare navigators, contact UWM’s public health partners at (414) 286-8620 or (414) 270-4677.
- To receive one-on-one, in-person guidance and sign up for insurance coverage on campus, stop by the UWM Student Health Insurance Enrollment Fair, Jan. 26, 2017. More details to come!
You do not need health insurance to use our services. We work to keep our services affordable for all students knowing that some students do not have insurance or if you do it has a high deductible. We do not bill any insurance directly, but through our Patient Portal in our electronic health record you can access your statements so that you can submit to your insurance or flexible spending account.
