Women’s & Gender Studies prepares for the future

A message from Carolyn J. Eichner, associate professor and chair of Women’s & Gender Studies at UWM:

Dear Women’s & Gender Studies affiliates,

On Wednesday, Feb. 1, at 4 p.m., Women’s & Gender Studies will hold a special WGS affiliates general meeting. We’ve planned this meeting because – as many of you know – WGS has gone through a transition in recent years, changing our name from Women’s Studies to Women’s & Gender Studies to more accurately reflect our work and interests, and altering our status from a program to a department-like body. As a result of this transformation and development, we are now modeling our structure on that of departments. This means that we will no longer have an advisory committee. But, we will absolutely continue to have affiliates! And this is where you come in.

At the affiliates general meeting on Feb. 1, we plan to update everyone on our new status and our recent progress, and to ask interested faculty and staff to remain (or become) involved in our future. At this historical moment, the need for a vital, engaged, and well-supported WGS unit is critically important.

This meeting is open to any faculty or staff with an interest in WGS – you do not have to be an official affiliate to attend. Please encourage your colleagues to join us. We hope to have a robust turnout, and to have this meeting mark the beginning of an exciting new era of collaboration and growth in WGS.

We very much hope you will remain connected and committed to WGS as affiliates. We sincerely appreciate your contribution to WGS – we could not have gotten here without you. See you at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 1, in Union 280!

With thanks,
Carolyn Eichner
