UWM Writing Center director honored

Margaret Mika has been awarded the 2018 Robert Marrs Award from the Midwest Writing Centers Association for her leadership as director of the UWM Writing Center.

Margaret Mika

Mika, who is also an adjunct assistant professor of English at UWM, is responsible for hiring, training and mentoring tutors and handling the Writing Center’s outreach activities, among other things. Since she became director of the center in 1999, student and staff use has skyrocketed from about 300 appointments per year to about 7,000.

The Robert Marrs Award was created to commend writing center directors throughout the Midwest for their dedication to promoting tutor-based writing improvement and supporting the development of writing center staff. Nominees are recommended for the award by tutors or other staff members from the respective writing centers, and are reviewed and voted on by a three-member committee before final selection.

Mika got both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees  from UWM. She will receive her award at the annual meeting of the Midwest Writing Centers Association, held March 1-3 in Omaha, Nebraska.
