UWM trumpeter on his way to national competition

Keaton Viavattine, UWM graduate student and teaching assistant in the Peck School of the Arts department of Music, is a semi-finalist in the National Trumpet Competition.

He is one of 40 graduate students chosen to perform live at the competition March 10-12 at Columbus State University in Columbus, Georgia.

Viavattine began performing professionally in high school as part of a wedding duo with his mother, a church organist. At UWM, he performs as principal trumpet with the UWM Orchestra and Wind Ensemble as well as first trumpet with the university’s premier brass quintet, “Milwaukee Brass.”

The competition is the most prestigious event of its kind in the United States, according to Kevin Hartman, professor of music and chair of Woodwind, Brass and Percussion.
