UWM named Center of Actuarial Excellence

UWM’s Actuarial Science program was recently designated a Center of Actuarial Excellence (CAE) by the Society of Actuaries, one of 18 universities in the United States to earn the title.

As a center, UWM will be eligible to compete for education grants to develop internships and co-ops, building on the program’s learning opportunities for students. The designation also highlights the strength of UWM’s program both in terms of actuarial education and research.actuaries_b

UWM was chosen because the quality of its curriculum, its connection to local industry, its abundance of research and scholarship opportunities, and the strength of its faculty. The Society of Actuaries praised UWM’s pursuit to “meet the mission of access, particularly providing a strong actuarial education to undergraduate students” who did not have typical access to mathematics education in high school.

In addition, program was ranked No. 16 of 30 actuarial programs in the U.S. as a “best value” program in January by College Values Online.

The number of students in the actuary degree program at UWM continues to grow as the profession is regularly voted a “best job” by numerous polls and surveys. UWM is particularly attractive because of Wisconsin’s relatively large insurance and financial services industry which drives a demand for new actuaries.
