UWM journalism students win 20 medals in Milwaukee Press Club competition

UWM journalism students took home 20 medals, including eight top-place gold awards, from the Milwaukee Press Club’s Excellence In Journalism collegiate contest on Saturday night.

The club gives gold, silver and bronze awards in multiple writing, audio, video and online news categories. Students in JAMS 500 won a gold award for investigative reporting on the dangers of concussions in high school sports. The JAMS 320, 342 and 204 classes won a gold for use of multi-media in a series on the 2016 election, and Keaton Walkowski and students in JAMS 320, 342 and 204 also won a gold medal best online news story for It’s Not the Water, which was part of that series.

Media Milwaukee, the news site contributed to by multiple journalism classes, was recognized as the best local news or feature website. The classes are led by instructors Jessica McBride, Jane Hampden and Jessica Marble.
