UWM joins parade for Mexico’s independence day

More than 20 students and staff members from UWM’s Roberto Hernández center joined in the 44th annual Mexican Independence parade Sept. 13 on Milwaukee’s south side – the Sunday closest to Mexico’s Independence Day, celebrated on Sept. 16 since 1825.

It was the biggest UWM turnout for the center since it began participating in parade more the 10 years ago, said Enrique Figueroa, the center’s director.

“The students’ participation increased awareness for the Roberto Hernández center and UWM,” Figueroa said. “It’s also a good opportunity for students to get out and participate in the community.”

Students and staff handed out candy to children lining the route and displayed flags and carried a banner promoting UWM and the Roberto Hernández center.
