UWM to host expo for parents

An expo for Milwaukee-area parents with workshops on money management, study strategies and effective communication and other topics will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the UWM Student Union.

Vincent Lyle, president and CEO of the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Milwaukee, will give the keynote address at the event co-sponsored by his organization and UWM. Along with workshops, there will be a community resource fair to connect families with nearby organizations dedicated to education and support, such as Milwaukee Public Library and local health clinics.

Parents may face many challenges when it comes to education, including caring for their parents at the same time they’re raising their children, said Angie Izard, senior GEAR Up advisor and one of the expo coordinators. The expo is aimed at giving them the resources they need to boost educational success for their whole family.

The expo is a “spin on the whole it-takes-a-village idea,” Izard said. “We want to open up our campus and make parents feel like guests.”

The event is free, transportation is available, and lunch is provided. Registration in advance is encouraged, but families also can register at the door. Spanish and Hmong translation services are available upon request.
