School of Education helps honor area Schools of Character

Area schools will be honored as Schools of Character in a ceremony June 15.

Three Wisconsin schools will be honored for their innovative and successful integration of character education into their programs as state and national Schools of Character.

UWM’s School of Education co-sponsors the awards with the Wisconsin Character Education Partnership. The schools being honored are: Brown Deer Middle School and High School, Brown Deer; Meyer Middle School, River Falls; Pleasant Prairie Elementary School, Pleasant Prairie.

The awards will be presented at the State Schools of Character conference and dinner, 5 p.m., June 15, at Alverno College, 3400 S. 43rd St.

Other schools recognized in 2016: Honorable Mention: Greenwood Elementary, River Falls; Emerging State School of Character: Westlawn Elementary, Cedarburg.

Wisconsin Character Education Partnership is a statewide coalition founded in 2006. It follows the 11 principles or guidelines developed by the national Character.org. The awards are open to public and private schools. Each school develops its own programs for promoting character education, based on input from families, students and school personnel. Wisconsin Character Education Partnership formed a partnership in 2012 with the School of Education.
