Public health drill at UWM simulates terrorist release of anthrax

Hundreds of people gathered at the Klotsche Center on UWM’s campus for a drill to prepare officials for how to respond to a public health emergency.

The drill’s scenario was that terrorists had released anthrax into the air in Milwaukee, with wind currents dispersing the spores across the region. Volunteers in the exercise simulated residents who may have inhaled anthrax and need antibiotics.

The statewide exercise wasn’t anthrax-specific. It’s intended to help communities prepare for any widespread health emergency.

Participating along with UWM were the City of Milwaukee and North Shore health departments.
