Poet laureate to host recitation event at UWM

UWM will host one of Kimberly Blaeser’s final events as Wisconsin poet laureate. The event will celebrate the memorization and recitation of poetry on Wednesday, Nov. 30, at 7 p.m. at UWM’s Hefter Center, 3271 N. Lake Drive.

Blaeser, a professor of English at UWM, promotes the art of poetry memorization and recitation. Since she was named poet laureate in January 2015, she has sponsored public events across the state where poets and poetry lovers come together for poetry recitation.

“Having poetry at our fingertips — or on our lips — as we go through our daily lives can enrich us in many ways,” Blaeser said. “Recitation was once a common art, one I’d like to help revive.”

Blaeser will continue to serve as Wisconsin poet laureate until December.

Anyone interested may recite a poem at the event. Poems by published poets should be memorized before the event and should be by an author other than the reciter.
