Hope Olson awarded the 2017 Margaret Mann citation

Hope Olson, professor emerita at UWM’s School of Information Studies, has received the 2017 Margaret Mann citation from the Association for Library Collections & Technical Services for outstanding professional achievement in cataloging or classification.

The ALCTS’s Cataloging and Metadata Management Section will present the citation on June 24 at the 2017 American Library Association conference in Chicago.

Olson was recognized for research and publication in cataloging, classification and classification theory. Her 2002 book, “The Power to Name: Locating the Limits of Subject Representation in Libraries,” continues to impact the field.

She currently serves on the Cataloging & Classification Quarterly editorial board and previously served on the editorial boards of the Journal of Library Metadata and Knowledge Organization.

Olson served as a professor at the School of Information Studies from 2003-13, as associate dean from 2007-10 and interim dean from 2010-11.

She also developed and administered UWM’s Diversity in the Organization of Information and its Technology program, which recruited students from underrepresented populations in the library profession.

In 2012, she received the WGSS Award for Career Achievement in Women & Gender Studies Librarianship from the Association of College and Research Libraries.
