Explore the university’s new, expanded news site

The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee has moved its faculty-staff newspaper, UWM Report, online with an expansion and update of the university’s news site.

The printed UWM Report served the university community for 35 years with news about important campus events, faculty members’ research and employees’ contributions to the greater Milwaukee area.

But in today’s fast-paced environment, a monthly publication no longer serves the needs of most readers. By moving UWM Report online, the journalists in Media Services will be able to provide daily — even hourly — updates about events and activities on campus. This shift to a “digital first” publications strategy reflects changes already seen at major media nationwide. Daily newspapers now provide hourly reports on their websites, and TV stations provide online updates between news broadcasts.

Online news also offers the opportunity to marry text, photographs and video in new and exciting ways. Expect to see video and photo slideshows displayed prominently on the new UWM Report news site. These multimedia stories will feed UWM’s social media accounts, which are important in recruiting and building our brand with external audiences.

Many news organizations also have seen tremendous savings in the move from a print to primarily digital platform, and UWM Report will be no different. In fact, we’ll be able to publish more news without adding to our costs. As an example, the online edition of UWM Report includes a Research section highlighting stories about research being done university-wide and an expanded For The Record, with listings of publications and presentations. Faculty members can submit items for For The Record at https://uwm.edu/news/faculty-staff/submissions/.

The site’s For Faculty & Staff section includes updates from the chancellor and provost, along with links to the latest budget news.

And, you will still have news delivered directly to you. UWM employees will receive bi-weekly emails showcasing the top news, announcements and events. A one-page monthly summary also will be posted in common areas for employees who don’t work at a desktop computer.
