Updates: Parking, traffic, other details

UW-Milwaukee’s Helene Zelazo Center for the Performing Arts on Kenwood Boulevard south of the UWM campus will be the site of the Democratic presidential debate, broadcast at 8 p.m. Feb. 11 on PBS and CNN.

UW-Milwaukee is providing information about traffic and parking restrictions on and around campus, before and after the debate. Milwaukee County Transit is providing information on affected bus routes.

Specific details are subject to change. Updates will be included here. Many of these changes are required because of security considerations.

TRAFFIC

Kenwood Boulevard will be closed to traffic between Downer Avenue on the east and Maryland Avenue on the west, beginning at 6 a.m. Feb. 11. The street is expected to reopen in the early morning of Feb. 12. Traffic on Kenwood Boulevard also may be affected on Feb. 10 and Feb. 12 because of TV satellite trucks parked there.

Additional streets south of campus will be closed to traffic beginning at 6 a.m. Feb. 11 between Kenwood Boulevard and Linwood Avenue. These streets include Farwell Avenue, Prospect Avenue and Stowell Avenue. Police will control access to local residences.

PARKING

The Northwest Quadrant will be a staging area throughout Feb. 11, with limited access to the adjacent parking garage. The NWQ parking garage will be open only to pass-holders and will be accessible only through the entrance on the northeast corner of the garage. Other parking in that area will be restricted. Non-pass holders who typically use the NWQ for daily parking should look for available space in the Pavilion garage.

The Capitol-Humboldt UPARK lot is expected to be used as a remote parking and shuttling location for debate attendees during the evening of Feb. 11.

The Zelazo Center parking lot will be closed to all traffic beginning at 6 a.m. Feb. 7, through the evening of Feb. 12. Drivers with a regular Hunting Permit who typically use this lot can use any other Hunting-Permit lot on campus. For more information, contact Parking and Transit, uwmpark@uwm.edu, (414) 229-4000.

The UWM Union Parking Garage will be closed to the public beginning at 6 a.m. on Feb. 11. The garage will be open both Wednesday and Friday, but is expected to be at or near capacity on these days.

VIEWING

Students may view the debate in the UWM Union Theater.

The Union Wisconsin Room will be open to the public with seats available on a first-come, first-served basis.

BUSES

Milwaukee County Transit buses in the area of the UWM Student Union on Kenwood Boulevard will be rerouted from Feb. 10-12.

The rerouting will allow buses to avoid Kenwood Boulevard between Downer Avenue and Maryland Avenue. These are in effect from 6 a.m. Wednesday through noon on Friday.

Routes 21, 22, 60, 40U, 44U, 49U, Redline and Goldline will all be affected. The rerouting information for each affected line is below. For more information, visit service alerts page of the Milwaukee County Transit System website.

Additional information is also available via Milwaukee County Transit on Twitter (@RideMCTS) and Facebook, or at (414) 344-6711.

Riders who usually board or disembark from buses along Kenwood Boulevard should refer to the detours for alternate stop locations. Signage will also be displayed at all affected stops.
