On Thursday, August 24 2017, 45 volunteers, including the Neighborhood Housing Office, went out into the neighborhood to deliver over 1,000 UNITE bags. The volunteers covered more than 140 blocks surrounding campus and reached an estimated 3,000 students. UNITE is a program that happens every year to welcome back returning students and say hello to new ones. This year, the Neighborhood Housing Office, under External Relations, collected coupons from various businesses throughout Milwaukee to stuff the bags with. Other offices on campus also contributed to the bag by providing shirts, pens, card holders and much more! Volunteers included university workers, students and surrounding neighbors, even Chancellor Mone went out and handed out his share of the bags. In an effort to promote unity between University and the community surrounding UWM, this event happens yearly and gets bigger and bigger, with more contributions and more volunteers. If UNITE sounds like something you would like to help with next year, either with handing out bags or contributing, follow #UWMNHO on Twitter and UWM Neighborhood Housing Office on Facebook for updates on UNITE and when the approximate date will be for next year! If you want to see what UNITE is all about watch the snapchat video below! The event really couldn’t happen without all of the volunteers. So here is a BIG thank you to everyone who helped deliver bags and all who sent in coupons and other items.
