To provide L&S faculty and staff with cost-effective and reliable long-term printing solutions, our office has established several guidelines for printer purchases. This page covers our policies on recommended printer models, leased network printers, and the purchase of printing supplies.
As part of a College-wide purchasing strategy, LSITO restricts the use of inkjet printers to employees with special requirements such as high-gloss printing. While the initial cost may be lower than comparable laser printers, the associated maintenance and support costs make inkjets a poor long-term solution.
Alternatively, L&S units requiring a higher-yield printer may wish to inquire about the possibility of leasing one of the Lanier printers supported by UWM Print Services. For the price of a leased printer, a fixed monthly fee and exceedingly low price per page, you receive free toner and paper directly from Print Services, a new printer every three years, and access to on-site repair technicians to ensure continuous operation.
For more details about the capabilities or pricing of the available Lanier models, please submit a Support Request.
As a more economical alternative to traditional desktop printers, many L&S units purchase or lease network printers which can accommodate the printing needs of multiple employees. Before purchasing personal desktop printers, employees should consult with their unit’s main office to determine whether an existing network printer may meet their needs. L&S units seeking new printers are encouraged to consider purchasing a newer, network-capable model.
All L&S units are responsible for the cost of their own printing supplies–any special arrangements should be finalized and documented before any new printer purchases. While printers are required to be purchased by L&S IT, toner may be purchased by each unit through MDS/Staples. For instructions on how to order toner for your printer, please submit a Technology Question form.
University funding may not be used to purchase printers or printing supplies for use at home, even when working on L&S business from home. Documents should be printed to University printers. This policy helps reduce the total cost of printing to the college due to duplicated and redundant services.
