Stephen Appel

Stephen Appel is the Geospatial Information Librarian at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Libraries. He works in the American Geographical Society Library, one unit of the UWM Libraries Distinctive Collections division. Stephen has an M.S. in Geography, a Graduate Certificate of Geographic Information Systems, and a B.S. in Conservation and Environmental Science--all from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He is responsible for the AGSL’s digital spatial data collections and related services that support research, scholarship, and coursework in GIS. Stephen has been involved with digital humanities projects including the Spanish Travelers Project at Marquette University and has published about teaching Geospatial Information Literacy as well as a range of topics related to GIS in higher education and libraries. He teaches workshops on introductory computer science skills through The Carpentries and is currently co-chair of the Data Carpentry Geospatial Curriculum Advisory Committee.
