Great Books Roundtable Discussions

November 29 @ 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM

Marcel Proust  Selection from the first part of In the Shadow of Young Girls in Flower, volume 2 of Proust’s In Search of Lost Time (Remembrance of Things Past). (1914)

Last year the Great Books Roundtable completed Swann’s Way, the first volume in Marcel Proust’s massive novel In Search of Lost Time (also translated as Remembrance of Things Past). For November, we will begin the second volume, In the Shadow of Young Girls in Flower (also translated as Within a Budding Grove).

For our discussion we will read the first 90 pages of Part 1, “Madam Swann at Home,” where we are introduced to a new character, M. de Norpois, a distinguished diplomat who has come to dinner. Our Narrator, who is now a teenager, continues to discover that people are not always what they seem or how one imagines them.

No expertise or prerequisites are required.  We only ask that you read the selected text.  Any version of the text may be used to prepare for discussion, but for your convenience a link to an online version of C. K. Scott Moncrief’s translation is provided above.

These discussions are free and open to the public. For more information on the Great Books Roundtable Discussions series, please visit the Great Books Roundtable Discussions website.
