2017 Fromkin Lecture imageGladys Mitchell-Walthour, Assistant Professor, UWM Department of Africology, presents “Afro-Brazilian YouTubers & Digital Social Justice Activism.”

Mitchell-Walthour examines Afro-Brazilian Women YouTubers’ social activism through their YouTube channels. Her lecture considers how Afro-Brazilian women YouTubers use African American leaders and media representations to examine issues relevant to black empowerment.

Moreover, she examines parallel concepts in Brazil and the United States such as black feminism, racism, and sexism and how Afro-Brazilian women YouTubers articulate the particularities of these issues in the Brazilian context and empower Afro-Brazilians through their digital activism.
