Introduction:

Based on campus wide feedback to the lists of proposed cancellations made available in April, UWM libraries has compiled a finalized list of material cancellations.   These consist of several material types: subscriptions to individual electronic journals, electronic journal packages, print journal subscriptions, subscriptions to databases, and subscriptions to microfilm and print newspapers. Cancellation and renewal decisions were based on cost, use, alternate availability, and feedback.

The cancellations represent $475,000 in collection cuts, and include (by format):
  • $187,338 in individual electronic journal subscriptions
  • $91,899 from Springer electronic journal subscriptions
  • $74,058 from Wiley electronic journal subscriptions
  • $25,095 in databases subscriptions
  • $76,564 in Print Serials, microfilm and newspapers subscriptions
  • $20,000 in monographs purchasing (Books)

Most will take effect January 1, 2017.

Please contact lib-crtf@uwm.edu* with any comments or questions about the finalized lists of materials for cancellation.

Journal Subscriptions:

Journal subscription consist of two subscription models:

  1. Individual subscriptions
  2. Package Subscriptions–Wiley and Springer

These spreadsheets contain the following information:

LC #:  Library of Congress call number that allows us to group these into subject areas.

Journal Title: The title of the journal to be cancelled

Full-text access or ILL: Lists the names of UWM full-text databases that provide access to the journal or if no access is available, that ILL is the only option for access.

Alternative Access to cancelled journal content:

  • The electronic journals targeted for cancellations often have full-text access available from on of UWM’s subscription full-text databases (aggregators). These journals will be discoverable, searchable, and accessible through the platform listed in column C: Full-text Access or ILL.  This access is not complete and often the most recent year is unavailable as full-text, but the most recent year will be available through ILL.  Journals with no full-text database overlap will have ILL only in column C.
  • Relying on ILL: Interlibrary Loan (ILL) averages delivery times between 8 hrs. – 2 days. Turning this content over to ILL, even when we pay for copyright costs, allows us to control costs while still providing access to our users.
