Through its participation in inter-institutional lending programs, the Archives assists UWM faculty, students, and the general public with locating and obtaining access to primary sources located at other archival repositories in the Milwaukee area and across Wisconsin. Only a limited amount of material may be transferred at one time. Due to their physical condition or financial value, some materials do not transfer.
Area Research Center (ARC) Network
The Wisconsin Historical Society (WHS) and the University of Wisconsin System cooperate in a network of Area Research Centers located at UW campus libraries throughout the state and the Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center. Through this network you may request the temporary loan of collections from WHS or another ARC for use at the Milwaukee Area Research Center, a program of the Archives Department. Transfers generally arrive within a week and are available for a semester (for university class assignments or extended research needs) or four weeks (for all other purposes). [more]
Cooperative Access Program (CAP) for Archives
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Libraries, the Marquette University Libraries, and the Medical College of Wisconsin participate in a Cooperative Access Program (CAP) that permits the temporary loan of archival and manuscript resources among the three institutions.
Identify materials to borrow from Marquette University’s Special Collections & University Archives by consulting their Web site. Holdings of the Medical College of Wisconsin’s Archives are described in their online catalog.
Transfers generally arrive within two business days and are available for 20 days. Milwaukee Area Research Center collections do not transfer among CAP institutions.
