Gladys Mitchell-Walthour, Visiting Assistant Professor, UWM Department of Africology, has been awarded the 2017 Morris Fromkin Memorial Grant for her project “Black Brazilian Social Justice Activism in the Digital Age.”

The grant, provided by the UWM Libraries, encourages and assists UWM scholars to conduct research on individuals, groups, movements, and ideas which have influenced the quest for social justice and human rights.

Dr. Mitchell-Walthour’s research proposes to answer the questions, “How does YouTube serve as a space for a new kind of social justice activism and how are Afro-Brazilian YouTubers informed by African-American culture and activists?”

Dr. Mitchell-Walthour will present a lecture on the results of her research in Fall 2017 at the Golda Meir Library. The Fromkin Memorial Lecture series is the longest running lecture series at UWM.

This year’s selection committee members were Anne Bonds, Johannes Britz, Michael Doylen, David Fromkin, Shelleen Greene, Cary Miller, Shana Ponelis, and Max Yela.
