George Brumder, through his Milwaukee-based Germania Publishing Company, was the largest producer of German-language materials in the US in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

This exhibition offers an overview of UWM Special Collections’ comprehensive collection of publications by Brumder demonstrating the importance of his work to German-Americans in Milwaukee and the nation as a whole as a producer of German-language materials.

George Brumder’s publishing enterprise played an important role in the cohesion of Milwaukee’s German-American community, publishing bibles, dictionaries, self-help books, fiction, biographies, children’s books, cookbooks, newspapers, and more.

The exhibition will offer an idea of Milwaukee’s position at the center of American German-language publishing from the 1860s into the 1920s, and the centrality of George Brumder’s work to that field.

“Druck und Verlag von George Brumder” will be on display from July 28 to September 30, 2016 and open to the public between the hours of 8:00 am and 5:00 pm Monday through Friday, or by appointment.
