nonprofit_profile_hudson_aAdam Hudson: Adam is a founding member of nonprof-IT and has been leading teams of students since the program launched in the fall of 2014. Adam teaches front end development courses at the School of Information Studies (SOIS) and once rode a mechanical bull for 24 seconds in Mexico. He earned a bachelors degree from the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire, his MLIS from UWM, and a Specialization in Web Development from the University of Southern California. In his spare time he enjoys traveling as much as possible and spending time with his young family.

Spring 2016 Students

Samuel AssfawSamuel Assfaw: Sam is a senior at the UWM majoring Information Science and Technology. He has already earned an associate degree in Liberal Arts from Madison Area Technical College. He is working and learning how to build his own startup company. Sam will be working on a team to build a website for the Midwest Association for Information Systems (MWAIS) and he is very excited about the opportunity, In his spare time, he enjoys traveling and watching sports.

He is also working towards his Healthcare Informatics Certificate. He currently works for the SOIS department in classroom support on campus. This is his 3rd semester in the nonprof-IT program. When Austin is not working or going to class, he enjoys working out and watching sports.  Austin is a member of the team working on the WAVE website re-design.

Derek BurzinskiDerek Burzinski: Derek is a senior at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee majoring in Information Science & Technology. He resides in Wausau and takes his classes 100% online. He has an associate degree in Web Design and Digital Media from Northcentral Technical College. This is his second semester in the nonprof-IT program. Last semester, Derek worked on the team that created a new website for Walker’s Point Youth and Family Semester. This semester, Derek will be working on the team building a website for the Midwest Association for Information Systems (MWAIS).

Ariana de Losada:  Ariana is a Senior at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee majoring in Information Science and Technology with a Digital Arts and Culture certificate. This is her first semester in the nonprof-IT internship program. She is part of the team working with Express Yourself Milwaukee on their social media campaign. She is looking forward to gaining valuable experience and hopes to work with more nonprofit organizations in the future. She enjoys drawing, reading and traveling in her free time.

Emily Geiger
Emily Geiger:  Emily is a senior at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee majoring in Information Science and Technology.  She has already completed her first Bachelors in Marketing from the Lubar School of Business.  She is really excited to be a part of a talented team that is working on the website redesign for ACAP Inc., and is hoping to gain new skills that will help enhance her IT portfolio.  When Emily is not in school or working she enjoys traveling, competing in triathlons, trying new restaurants, and going to events around the city.

Lisa Hang: Lisa is a senior in the Information and Science Technology program at UWM SOIS. She is passionate about technology and interested in web design and development. Previously, she was a student web developer at UWM. Now she is a Web Technician at her current employer. She enjoys reading UX blogs and tech news. Nick Kaczanowski
Nick Kaczanowski:  Nick is a junior at UWM, majoring in Information Science and Technology. He wants to achieve a minor in health informatics, business or computer science, but is not completely sure. This is his first year in the nonpro-fIT program and is ready for the opportunity to get real world experience working with Milwaukee Teacher Education Center. He enjoys watching movies and listening to music and playing sports. His favorite movie is Forrest Gump.

Justin currently serves as a Network and Telecommunications intern at CNH Industrial in Mount Pleasant, WI. Justin graduated from Pulaski High School but now resides full time in Milwaukee. He loves sports, relaxing with friends, and learning new skills to enhance his IT portfolio.  Justin is team lead working on the WAVE website re-design.

Devon Matthias
Devon Matthias:  Devon is a senior at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee who is majoring in Information Science and Technology with a minor in Graphic Design and a certificate in Digital Arts & Culture. Devon’s design studies allow him to incorporate it into his web development practices. He is really excited for the opportunity to learn new skills and be able to give back to the local community. In his free time, Devon enjoys watching movies and attending concerts. Devon is a member of the team working on the ACAP website re-design project.

Theo Mitchell
Theo Mitchell:  Theo is a Senior at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee majoring in Information Science and Technology with a Digital Arts and Culture certificate and also a Web Development Certificate. During his free time he enjoys weight lifting, drawing and working on his car. This is his first time in the Nonprof-IT program. He is working with Express Yourself Milwaukee.  He is excited to be able to help the Milwaukee community and finally put all the skills that he gained in college to work.

Faraji StarksFaraji Starks:  Faraji is a senior at the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee majoring in Information Science and Technology. This is his first time taking part in Nonprof-IT and has been assigned to work on the COPE Services website re-design team. Prior to transferring to UW-Milwaukee to complete his bachelor’s degree, Faraji worked in the nonprofit sector as a Web Services Manager for the Himalayan Institute for nearly two years. Outside of work, one might find Faraji cooking, drinking homemade chai, doing yoga, or playing video games in virtual reality.

Lauren Trotter
Lauren Trotter:  Lauren is a junior at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee double majoring in Information Science & Technology and Digital Arts & Culture with a certificate in Web Development. This is her first semester in the Nonprof-IT internship and is working on the WAVE website redesign. She is really excited to have this opportunity to be able to learn more and gain new hands on experiences all while helping organizations from the community. In her free time Lauren enjoys making digital art with the Adobe Suite, going to concerts, and hanging out with her friends.

Mark Van Weelden
Mark Van Weelden: Mark is a Senior at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee majoring in Information Science and Technology. He is excited to be in the NonprofIT program. He is part of the team performing a technology assessment at the Milwaukee Teacher Education Center. Mark has a passion for computer programming. In his free time, he loves to write computer programs and read programming books. Additionally, he is a lifelong fan of the Milwaukee Brewers.

Fall 2016 Students

He is working on his second degree at UWM (the first being a B.S. in electrical engineering). He currently works full time while attending classes part time online and being a husband and father of four children. This is his 2nd semester in nonprof-IT having previously worked with Community First in the spring of 2015. He is a member of the online team re-designing the website for Walker’s Point Youth & Family Center. Jordan enjoys spending time with family, enjoying an old kung fu or 80s movie, and watching sports.

Brian Ahrens: Brian is a part of the online student team re-designing the website for Walker’s Point Youth & Family Center.  This is Brian’s first semester in the nonprof-IT internship program.

nonprofit_profile_pham_jJesse Pham: Currently a senior at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Jesse is set to graduate in December 2016 with his B.S. in Information Science and Technology. Raised by educators and tech enthusiasts, Jesse has always had a deep interest in technology and it’s use in education. Upon graduating he hopes to attend an Education graduate program to pursue research in the field of instructional technology. Having already gained a well-rounded experience as a student worker at UWM (2 years of Help Desk, 1 year as a Resident Assistant, and 1 year of Web Development) Jesse is eager to further practice his management skills and apply them to his nonprof-IT project as the Team Lead for the Arma Foundation website redesign. His motto as a leader is “lead from the trenches”. Beyond technology, Jesse enjoys studying his foreign language, Japanese, and just recently returned from spending his Spring 2016 & Summer 2016 semester at Hosei University in Tokyo, Japan.

In her free time, Monique enjoys painting, writing, playing video games, and traveling. Monique is a member of the team working on the Literary Services of WI website re-design.

nonprofit_profile_skenandore_kKiera Skenandore: Keira is a transfer student from Illinois currently studying Information Science and Technology at the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee. She is pursuing a minor in Computer Science and is working towards certificates in Web Development as well as Digital Arts & Culture. This is her first experience in the nonprof-IT program, and is a member of the team working on the Bryon Riesch Foundation website re-design. Keira looks forward to using the skills gained from IST coursework to positively contribute to the Milwaukee community. She also hopes to broaden her knowledge and enhance her web development skills through the work for nonprof-IT. Outside of schoolwork, she greatly enjoys art and graphic design.

He is also working towards his Web Development Certificate. He currently works for UWM University Relations’ Web and Mobile department as a student Web Developer. This is his first time in the nonprof-IT program and he will be working as a team member to redesign Literacy Services of Wisconsin website. In his spare time, Eligio likes walking his dog, reading technology blogs, listening to music, and watching movies.

Aylin Birlik: Aylin is a senior at UW-Milwaukee pursuing a degree in Information Sciences and Technology and a Health Care Informatics Certificate. This is her second semester being a part of the program. Last fall she was a part of the team that created a new website for the UWM Planetarium and this semester she is a part of the Spotted Eagle website redesign team. In her free time she loves to watch Turkish and German shows to improve language vocabulary. After graduation, she hopes to get a job somewhere in Europe or Turkey.

Austin Bricco: Austin is currently a junior at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee majoring in Information Science and Technology. He is also working towards his Healthcare Informatics Certificate. He currently works for the SOIS department in classroom support on campus. He is looking forward for the opportunity to work in an internship setting and gain more experience towards his degree. When Austin is not working or going to class, he enjoys working out and watching sports.

Stephanie Coffey: Stephanie is a senior at UWM, pursuing a degree in Information Science and Technology, with a minor in Political Science. She is employed on campus as data intern for the Career Planning and Resource Center, where she recently created a data import process consolidating national job postings to be made available through PantherJobs for UWM students and alumni. She also works as a mobile application developer intern with UWM’s App Brewery. Stephanie leads the Student Association design and development team in creating a UW system-wide website to provide students with financial aid literacy and resources. In her spare time, she enjoys volunteering, spending time with her family and friends, and learning new programming languages.

Jack Comiskey: Jack is a senior at UWM majoring in Information Science and Technology with a minor in Computer Science and a certificate in Web Development. He sought out this opportunity with nonprof-IT in hopes of learning outside of the classroom and becoming more involved in the community. Jack went to high school in Milwaukee and after some time at the University of Iowa, is back to finish out his degree at UWM. He is looking forward to working with All Hands Boatworks and helping them to improve their presence on the web. In his free time Jack enjoys playing sports, hanging out with friends, playing cards, and drawing among other things.

Sam Goerke: Sam is currently a third year student at UWM working towards a degree in Information Science and Technology with a minor in International Studies. He currently works as an Academic Tutor in the SOIS department, as well as a student worker in the Golda Meir Library. This will be his first time with nonprof-IT working as the Team Lead for the Spotted Eagle group. In his spare time he enjoys traveling, geocaching, reading, and all things technology related.

Joshua Hazzard: Josh is currently a junior at UWM majoring in Information Science and Technology while pursuing a certificate in Digital Arts and Culture and Healthcare Informatics. Noour Hinnawi: Noour is currently a junior at UWM majoring in Information Science and Technology with a minor in general business and a certificate in healthcare informatics. She currently works as a patient service representative at Aurora Healthcare, and also one of the developers working on the All Hands Boatworks team for nonprof-IT. She enjoys spending time with family and friends when not so busy with school and work! She hopes to gain new skills in teamwork, and working with an organization.

Soojin Lee: Soojin is a senior at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee majoring Information Science and Technology while also studying for the Health Care Informatics certificate. She is interested in Web Design and Web Development as well as Database Management. This is her first internship in nonprof-IT and she will work as a team member re-designing the Kids Tales website. Justin Liegl: Justin is a junior at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee studying Information Science and Technology with an emphasis on healthcare informatics. This is his first semester in the nonprof-IT program and he is very excited to be the team lead for the Kids Tales team. Justin is currently a front office member for the School of Information Studies along with being a web designer for the Student Success Center on campus. Justin graduated from Pulaski High School but now resides full time in Milwaukee and is currently seeking an opportunity to use his IT skills to benefit a company in the area. He loves sports, relaxing with friends, and learning new skills to enhance his IT portfolio.

Shayon Mukherjee: Shayon is a Senior at UW-Milwaukee pursuing his BS in Information Technology and Computer Science (Minor). Shayon has been an active contributor to open source technologies. While in college, he has worked in roles like Google Summer of Code developer and Full Stack Developer-Mentor for Bloc.io. When not attending classes or hacking on latest programming stacks like Node.Js or Angular.Js, he also works as a Freelance Full Stack Web Developer, where he is helping out entrepreneurs and startups build fine applications. Shayon is looking forward to learning more about the workings of a Non Profit Org, collaborating in a team, and expanding his skill-sets by working on new technologies and use the same to build great products.

Monique Schneider: Monique is a junior at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee pursuing a Bachelor’s of Science in Information Science & Technology, a web development certificate, and digital arts certificate. Garrett Spoke: Garrett is a freshman at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee majoring in Information Science and Technology. This is his first semester in the nonprof-IT internship, and he’s excited to be a part of the team for the UWM Student Association project. He hopes to expand his knowledge of technology and the use of WordPress through his experience in nonprof-IT. In his free time, Garrett enjoys watching technology YouTube channels, playing video games, and building custom computers.

Nathan Trost: Nathan is currently a junior at UW-Milwaukee majoring in Information Science and Technology,and minoring in Computer Science. This is his first time in the nonprof-IT program and is excited to be a team member for the Spotted Eagle team. He is looking forward to getting some hands on experience with web development and web design, while also collaborating with a small team of people. He graduated from Homestead High School in Mequon, and now lives in downtown Milwaukee. In his spare time he enjoys listening to music, snowboarding, and video editing.

Jeff Zellner: Jeff is a Second Degree Student currently in his final semester in the Information Science and Technology program. Jeff sought an opportunity to participate in the SOIS Non-Profit Internship to gain work experience in the Information Technology field while simultaneously helping an organization that does important work in our community. Jeff previously obtained Bachelor Degrees in Psychology and Human Development from the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay and worked in the Mental Health Field in Milwaukee County for the past 13 years. Jeff is the Team Lead for the All Hands Boat Works this semester. Outside of school, Jeff enjoys watching movies, reading comic books, and spending time with his family.

Ye Gun Kim: Ye Gun is a member of the team working on a web portal on financial aid and student loan literacy for the UWM Student Association. Ye Gun is an international student from South Korea.

Staff

Steven Cohn: Steven is in his second year of the Masters of Library and Information Science program at SOIS. He is currently pursuing a concentration in Information Technology, hoping to further enhance the skill set that he learned after completing his Bachelor’s of Science in Information Science & Technology. Steven used the skills that he learned through the program to design websites for local businesses, including non-profits. Upon graduation in December 2015, Steven hopes to continue designing websites in his future career.

Students

Sienna Bast: Sienna is a senior at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee studying Information Science and Technology with an emphasis in programming, web development and design. This is her second semester in the nonprof-IT internship, and she’s very excited to be the team lead for the Running Rebels team. As of now, she works as an IT Systems Specialist Intern at Johnson Controls, and as an Academic Tutor on campus. She hopes ­to gain more knowledge of project management and development concepts through her Fall 2015 experience in nonprof-IT.

This is my first IT related internship and I am excited to gain knowledge in web development. I am part of the redesign website of the UWM Manford Olsen Planetarium. In my free time, I love to watch Turkish and German shows, to improve my language vocabulary. After graduation, I hope to get a job somewhere in Europe or Turkey.

Kristin Bowers: Kristin is a senior at UWM majoring in Information Science and Technology, while also pursuing a Digital Arts and Culture certificate. She currently works at Northwestern Mutual on their data networking team, and will continue working there after graduation. She is very excited to be the team lead for the Capitol Heights project, and is eager to gain experience in project management and web development. In her free time, Kristin enjoys spending time outdoors, playing video games, and listening to podcasts.

Erik Butz: Erik is a Senior at University of Wisconsin Milwaukee studying Information Science and Technology graduating December 2015. He currently works full time for Kohl’s Department store as a Dialer Technical Team lead, and is a full time student for the Fall semester. He is focusing on Web Design and Web Development with his major and is excited to work on the project for Capitol Heights. He is excited to use the skills he acquired from UWM, and the new skills he will be picking up on this project. When he’s not in school or work, he spends time learning new practices and new techniques for web development. Upon graduating, Erik hopes to work in the web design or web development field.

This is his first internship with nonprof-IT, and is currently part of the team redesigning the website for UW-Milwaukee’s Manfred Olson Planetarium. In his spare time, he enjoys playing golf and watching sports.

Madeline Jaeger: Madeline is a senior at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee who is studying Information Science and Technology with an emphasis in web development and web design. She currently works as a Front End Development intern at Northwoods Web Solutions and as a Teaching Assistant at the School of Information Studies on campus. This is her second semester working in a nonprof-IT internship; she will be working with the Running Rebels team this semester as a developer. When she’s not coding for school or work, she’s busy working on side projects and keeping up to date with the latest coding and design standards. Upon graduation, Madeline hopes to continue working in web design and development.

Keith Kaczor: Keith is a Senior attending UW-Milwaukee, majoring in Information Science as well as minoring in Computer Science. His primary focus is on programming and web design. This is his first internship with nonprof-IT, and he’s part of the team that is redesigning UW-Milwaukee’s Manfred Olson Planetarium website. Outside of Information Science, Keith also is an amateur musician, creating various different styles of electronic music, with an emphasis on ambient drone motifs.

Nick Kubczak: Nick is a Senior at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee studying Information Science and Technology with a focus on web design and databases. This is Nick’s first semester in the nonprof-IT internship and he is very excited to be a part of the Running Rebels team as a developer. Through playing sports his entire life (soccer, tennis and baseball) he has developed a great work ethic and learned how to be a great team member. Nick currently works at the UITS Help Desk at UW-Milwaukee and has learned great customer service and troubleshooting skills.

Holly Leto: Holly is a senior studying Information Science and Technology, graduating in December 2015. She has been accepted into the MLIS program at UWM for the Spring 2016 term. She spent four years in the U.S. Navy and sixteen years happily raising a family. Holly looks forward to being able to apply what she has learned so far while working with Dance Circus. The experience will be valuable to her in her future endeavors. In her spare time, she likes to stay busy with her children, read, and knit.

Lae Loe: Loe is a senior student at University of Wisconsin Milwaukee majoring Information Science and Technology. This is his last semester of studying at UWM. His primary focus is web development and design. He also enjoys studying database management particularly in SQL server. This is his first internship with SOIS nonprof-IT program, and he’s a part of a team that is redesigning the Running Rebels website. In addition to English Language, Lae also speaks Burmese and Karen, and was a member of All Burma IT student Union from 2008 to 2011.

Steve Smolik: I am a senior at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee studying Information Science and Technology with a certificate in Health Care Informatics. This is my first semester volunteering in the nonprof-IT internship, and I am very excited to be a member for the Running Rebels team. I am currently working as a contractor with TEKsystems contracting for Abbvie developing their SharePoint applications. I hope to gain more knowledge of WordPress and help the team in any area needed while utilizing my many years of work experience. When I am not doing homework for school or at work, I am busy working on web application side projects. I also enjoy watching sports and playing with my granddaughter.

Elizabeth Spektor: Elizabeth is a junior at UW-Milwaukee, who is an Information Science and Technology and Spanish major. She currently works part time as a graphic designer. She enjoys volunteering and participating in student organizations in her free time. She is the Membership Chair of Mortar Board. She wants to gain more teamwork, leadership, and IT skills. This is her first internship experience and she is looking forward to designing a website for Capitol Heights.

Joshua Treuer: Joshua is a Junior at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee earning a degree in Information Science and Technology (IST) as well as a certificate in Healthcare Informatics. He plans to pursue graduate school after completing his undergraduate degree. One of his greatest passions is working with computers and technology. Joshua really enjoys the IST program because he is able to apply his passion to his school work. He is very excited to be working as the team lead for the UWM Manfred Olson Planetarium website redesign project. He also works on campus with Student Affairs Information Technology Services where he has gained invaluable experience in a real-world IT setting, which he plans to build off of during the course of the nonprof-IT internship.

Favian Velasco: Favian is a senior at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee studying Information Science and Technology with a minor in Computer Science. His main focus is in programming, and web development. He is also currently working as an intern at Wells Fargo on their IT Service Desk team. This is his first semester participating in the nonprof-IT internship, and he is very excited to work on the project for Capitol Heights. He is eager to apply the web development skills he has acquired in his courses, and also gain new skills from this experience. In his free time Favian enjoys taking his dog on walks, playing sports, and working on his own projects.

Spring 2015 Students
Jordan Acevedo: Jordan is a senior with an emphasis on web development and design. He is working on his second degree at UWM (the first being a B.S. in electrical engineering). He currently works full time while attending classes part time online and being a husband and father of four children. He is very excited to work on the project with Community First to learn more about the web design and development project process, to learn more skills, and to help an organization that impacts the community where he was raised. In his spare time, Jordan enjoys spending time with family, enjoying an old kung fu or 80s movie, and watching sports.

Sienna Bast: Sienna is a junior at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee studying Information Science and Technology with an emphasis in programming, web development and design. This is her first semester partaking in the nonprof-IT internship, and she’s very excited to be a developer for the RiverKeeper team As of now, she work as a supervisor in the UW-Milwaukee School of Information Studies IT office, and as an Academic Tutor. She hopes to gain more knowledge of WordPress and professional teamwork through her experience in nonprof-IT.

Roderick Battiste: Roderick is a senior at the UWM. He is currently interested in the design aspect of web development, and hopes to utilize the skills he has learned in the many courses he has taken at UWM. This is his first semester not only being an intern, but also participating in the nonprof-IT internship. He currently works at the University Information Technology Services Help Desk on campus. He hopes to gains new skills in teamwork, and working with an organization. He will be on the team working with Community First to redesign their website.

Jon Condon: Jon is a code junkie. He is Team Lead and Web Developer for Milwaukee’s Riverkeeper project. He is also a Mobile App Developer with Milwaukee’s App-Brewery. Apart of coding a lot, he is involved with many organizations on campus. He enjoys the busy schedule, as it challenges himself everyday in coding. With playing sports all his life and working since 9-yrs of age, excelling with work ethic is what he knows best. He is an Information Science Technology major that challenges himself to be up to date on coding standards and learning new languages. When he is not busy pushing code and learning a new language, you’ll probably find him on the basketball court working hard once again.

Upon graduation, Madeline hopes to continue working in the web development and design field.

Jeff Jandourek: During the inaugural Fall 2014 nonprof-IT program, Jeff Jandourek was involved in the creation of the Basilica of St. Josaphat Foundation’s new website.  Jeff and his teammates formulated a design best suited to the foundation’s mission, created a dynamic space that was scalable to their present and future needs, and trained the staff how to maximize its potential.  Jeff iniatially served as a designer on the basilica project.  In the spring he will be leading a team of his peers to create a website and new branding for Community First in Milwaukee.

Colin Stuart: Colin is a senior at UWM studying Information Science & Technology with an emphasis on network and server administration. He works at a local small business which services computers, servers, networks and printers for home users as well as other businesses and non-profits. He constantly stays up to date with latest technology news and is always looking forward to what’s coming next. Having volunteered his time before he’s looking forward to what he can do to help the team with Milwaukee RiverKeepers’ needs.
