UWM is proud to announce that it will provide professional development opportunities for all employees, and specifically for supervisors, during the 2016-17 academic year.

Registration for each class is now open, and will remain open until 48 hours prior to each class, or until the class is filled. To enroll in one of the professional development classes please click on the registration button below.

Courses for Employees

Each of the courses for employees has a capacity of 40 participants and will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Participation in the seminars is on a voluntary basis, with supervisory approval.
Employees should discuss any training plans and dates with their supervisor to ensure there is adequate coverage. To the extent that it is possible and practical, supervisors are encouraged to allow their staff to participate in professional development opportunities.

1. Successfully Managing Conflict

Date: Tuesday, November 8, 2016
Time: 9:00 A.M. – 11:00 A.M.
Location: UWM Golda Meir Library, 4th Floor Conference Room
Facilitator: Dan Krueger, UW Colleges & Extension

This two hour seminar will provide employees with strategies to successfully manage conflict they, or their colleagues, may be involved in.

2. Team Building

Date: Wednesday, February 8, 2017
Time: 9:00 A.M. – 11:00 A.M.
Location: UWM Golda Meir Library, 4th Floor Conference Room
Facilitators: Tim Danielson, Associate Vice Chancellor – Human Resources, Stan Yasaitis, Chair, University Staff Council, and Gina Halenka, Human Resources Specialist Senior, UW Milwaukee.

You can lead from any level of an organization. This two hour seminar will prepare employees to lead others by understanding behaviors that promote a stronger team.

3. Change Management

Date: Thursday, March 9, 2017
Time: 9:00 A.M. – 11:00 A.M.
Location: UWM Golda Meir Library, 4th Floor Conference Room
Facilitator: Dan Krueger, UW Colleges & Extension

Learn to embrace and successfully navigate change. This two hour seminar will assist employees with understanding the stages of change, how they can master each stage and successfully navigate the change process.

Each of the courses for supervisors has a capacity of 30 participants and will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

1. Creating Conditions that Motivate

Date: Wednesday, November 9, 2016
Time: 9:00 A.M. – 11:00 A.M.
Location: UWM Golda Meir Library, 4th Floor Conference Room
Facilitators: Dr. Julia Bonner, Executive Director, Norris Health Center, Tim Danielson, Associate Vice Chancellor – Human Resources, and Joseph LeMire, Chief, University Police, UW Milwaukee

This two hour seminar will provide supervisors with the tools to help them create conditions that foster motivated, engaged employees.

2. Understanding Specific, Complex Compliance Requirements

Date: Tuesday, January 17, 2017
Time: 9:00 A.M. – 11:00 A.M.
Location: UWM Golda Meir Library, 4th Floor Conference Room
Facilitators: Jason Kuiper, Program & Policy Analyst, Advanced and Kirstin Goetz, Senior University Legal Counsel, UW Milwaukee

This two hour seminar will help supervisors become acquainted with compliance obligations under the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

3. Successfully Managing Conflict

This two hour seminar will provide supervisors with strategies to successfully manage conflict they may be involved in or conflict subordinates may be involved in.

4. Productive Performance Management

Date: Wednesday, March 8, 2017
Time: 9:00 A.M. – 12:00 P.M.
Location: UWM Golda Meir Library, 4th Floor Conference Room
Facilitators: Joely Urdan, Chief Legal Counsel, Office of Legal Affairs, Karen Massetti-Moran, HR Program Officer, Human Resources, and Joseph LeMire, Chief, University Police, UW Milwaukee

This three hour seminar will provide supervisors with recognition strategies to inspire great performance and strategies to confront performance issues, including how to have difficult performance based conversations.

5. Understanding the Employee Disciplinary Process

Date: Thursday, April 6, 2017
Time: 9:00 A.M. – 12:00 P.M.
Location: UWM Student Union, Room 345
Facilitators: Shannon Bradbury, Employment Relations Coordinator and Donna McGee, Associate Director and Senior University Legal Counsel, UW Milwaukee

This three hour seminar will acquaint supervisors with the disciplinary process for all employee categories. It is strongly encouraged that supervisors intending to attend this seminar also attend the Productive Performance Management seminar on March 8, 2017.
