UWM personnel are engaged in a range of duties in service to the students, involving teaching, research, administration, infrastructure, and professional services. The four employment categories include: Faculty, Academic Staff, Limited Appointees, and University Staff.
Faculty hold the rank of professor, associate professor, assistant professor, or instructor in an academic department or its functional equivalent. The two types of faculty appointments are probationary and tenured.
Academic Staff are personnel that are exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), and that hold positions that are executive, administrative, professional, and computer-related in nature. The two types of Academic Staff appointments are instructional and non-instructional.
A person in a Limited Appointment serves at the pleasure of the authorized official who made the appointment. By law, certain positions must be designated as limited appointments, such as Chancellor, Provost, Vice Chancellor, Dean, Academic Program Director, Department Chairperson, etc.
University Staff are personnel that are nonexempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and that contribute in a broad array of positions in support of the university’s mission. The University Staff service includes Temporary and Project positions.
