Purpose
This course is an overview of computational research and an introduction to
Unix and shell scripting for automating computational tasks. The primary goals
are to help researchers determine what types of computational tools might be
useful in their research, and to provide an introduction to computer use.
Classes will be part lecture, part open discussion, and part hands-on practice. We hope that these meetings will result in the spread of knowledge in all directions and help establish new connections between researchers with common interests.
Prerequisites
None. Anyone interested in using computers for research is encouraged to attend.
Note: This workshop is a prerequisite for Introduction to Parallel Computing, Unix Shell Scripting, and Introduction to Parallel Programming.
Course Content
This workshop provides an overview of methods, software, and hardware resources used in computational science, an introduction to Unix, shell scripting for automating computational tasks, and a brief overview of data management.
We cover most of the material in Part I of the UWM Research Computing User’s Guide (PDF).
