Fellowships for Graduate Study

Graduate School Fellowships

Approximately 14 Graduate School fellowships are awarded annually to exceptional newly admitted or currently enrolled UWM graduate students. Awards are for full-time study only. In the academic year 2016-17 (fall/spring), fellows receive a stipend of $15,000 plus full coverage of resident tuition/fees (approximately $9,000 for 6 credits) and remission of nonresident tuition (for students who are not residents of Wisconsin). Graduate School Dissertation Fellowships

Approximately 14 Dissertation Fellowships are awarded to students with dissertator status. Applicants must have obtained dissertator status by September 1 of the award year. Fellows currently receive a stipend of $16,500 for the 2015-16 academic year. The application deadline is December 1. Awards are announced by mid-January. AOP Fellowships

Approximately 30 Advanced Opportunity Program (AOP) Diversity Fellowships are awarded annually to disadvantaged members of groups underrepresented in graduate study. Under-represented groups include but are not limited to: a) African American; b) Latino; c) American Indian/Alaskan Native; and d) statutorily designated Southeast Asian (a person who was admitted to the U.S. after December 31, 1975, and who is either a former citizen of Laos, Vietnam, or Cambodia or whose ancestor was or is a citizen of Laos, Vietnam, or Cambodia). All awards are for full-time study. Applicants must be American citizens or permanent residents of the United States. In the academic year 2015-16, fellows receive a stipend of $15,000 plus full coverage of resident tuition/fees. Nonresident tuition is remitted for all Fellows who are not residents of Wisconsin. In addition, recipients will benefit from a $1,000 travel award that will accompany each fellowship award. The application deadline is December 1. Awards are announced by early April. External Fellowships and Grants

There are a number of opportunities for external funding for research work, including but not limited to small targeted grants to use research collections, grants that support research in particular subject areas and fellowships for overseas research.
