Philanthropy is synonymous with American history, principles, and culture; yet it remains an evolving and largely misunderstood topic. What is Philanthropy? seeks to enhance our understanding of philanthropy and its role in American culture and society.

This film takes a holistic view of this important subject by presenting its historical context with contemporary issues – including various perspectives from a wide variety of stakeholders.

Join HBI and the UWM Nonprofit Management Alumni Chapter for the 2nd film of our inaugural Summer Film Series looking into all aspects of the world social sector and our place in this ever evolving landscape.

Join us for a screening of MILWAUKEE 53206, which Milwaukee Public Radio calls, “a powerful new documentary.” Through the lens of these intimate journeys, the film illustrates the high toll incarceration has taken on the hearts, souls and lives of so many Americans and their families.

MILWAUKEE 53206 chronicles the lives of those living in the ZIP code that incarcerates the highest percentage of black men in America, up to 62%. Through the intimate stories of three 53206 residents, we witness the high toll mass incarceration takes on individuals and families that make up the community. The film not only examines Milwaukee’s ZIP code 53206, but also illuminates the story of people from across the United States who live with the daily effects of mass incarceration.

Admission is free of charge — but pre-registration tickets are required due to limited seating.

Following the screening, we will be having a group discussion on our thoughts, views and what we can now do to support the children, parents and families affected by mass incarceration. Please join us!

Poverty, Inc.

Monday, August 6 2018 7 - 9 PM

UWM Student Union Fireside Lounge

Join HBI and the UWM Nonprofit Management Alumni Chapter for the 3rd and final film of our inaugural Summer Film Series looking into all aspects of the world social sector and our place in this ever evolving landscape.

“I see multiple colonial governors,” says Ghanaian software entrepreneur Herman Chinery-Hesse of the international development establishment in Africa. “We are held captive by the donor community.”

The West has positioned itself as the protagonist of development, giving rise to a vast multi-billion dollar poverty industry — the business of doing good has never been better. Yet the results have been mixed, in some cases even catastrophic, and leaders in the developing world are growing increasingly vocal in calling for change.

Drawing from over 200 interviews filmed in 20 countries, Poverty, Inc. unearths an uncomfortable side of charity we can no longer ignore.

From TOMs Shoes to international adoptions, from solar panels to U.S. agricultural subsidies, the film challenges each of us to ask the tough question:

Could I be part of the problem?

Admission is free of charge — but pre-registration tickets are required due to limited seating.

Following the screening, we will be having a group discussion of poverty relief and sustainable development. Please join us!
