Freshwater. No resource is more valuable. No resource is more stressed. No responsibility is more pressing than to preserve our freshwater resources for the future. More than any other natural resource, freshwater benefits humankind and the world in which we live.
Building on 40 years of research excellence, UWM launched the nation’s first School of Freshwater Sciences (SFS) in 2009. Our mission is to promote the health and sustainability of freshwater systems worldwide, through strategic science, the creation of innovative technologies, and the preparation of the next generation of freshwater leadership.
SFS will revolutionize our use and stewardship of the Great Lakes and other global freshwater resources—by engaging our brightest minds, giving them an unparalleled workplace, providing them with the latest research tools, and spurring them toward new discoveries.
What to Support
Your generous philanthropic investment in the following areas will help our students, faculty, and staff make critical advances in freshwater study and research—advances certain to impact our environment and the health and safety of citizens in Milwaukee and around the globe.
Graduate Student Fellowships & Faculty Positions
To support students and faculty already at the school, and also to fund the growth of our academic and research programs. We will double the size of our program and enhance the diversity of our faculty and students.
Funding to Develop and Bolster Centers of Research Excellence
To focus on environmental health and safety, water policy, and management. These centers will leverage industry interests, capture and support economic opportunities, and play a significant role in public health in Milwaukee, throughout the region, and nationwide.
To grow our world-renowned water research campus on the shores of the Great Lakes and design and construct the nation’s most technologically advanced freshwater research vessel. A truly 21st century “floating classroom,” this vessel will be designed with modern automation, hybrid propulsion and navigation systems, and state-of-the-art analytical, robotic, and underwater exploration tools. It will serve as a Great Lakes icon and improve the management and protection of one of the world’s most precious natural resources.

Gifts of publicly traded securities that have appreciated in value allow you to avoid capital gains taxes, while also receiving a tax deduction for your gift. UWM benefits by selling the stock without paying taxes on the gain, and you benefit from knowing that your contribution is larger than it would have been as a cash gift.
Please send (or ask your broker to send) the UWM stock gift form to the UWM Foundation prior to transferring the securities, to make sure you receive proper acknowledgement for your gift.
