Why Support

UWM’s College of Engineering and Applied Science (CEAS) performs research to address major societal challenges, impact industrial practice, and contribute to basic knowledge in science and technology. Educating more than 1,600 undergraduates and 400 graduate students each year, we provide the world-class preparation that allows engineers to meet current industry needs and make innovative contributions throughout their careers.

With significant student demand for our programs and increased industry demand for our graduates, CEAS holds a critical position, not only for UWM, but also for the entire region. We produce talented graduates whose expertise drives innovation and economic development. We also maximize our strong industry partnerships, particularly in key areas of excellence: advanced manufacturing, energy and sustainability, water and environment, and biomedical and health care.

CEAS students arrive at UWM from a variety of backgrounds, and our graduates serve a broad range of companies and organizations. We strive to enhance the quality and diversity of our student body, build a learning environment conducive to creativity and entrepreneurship, and expand our research and economic development activities.

What to Support

We welcome support from our alumni, donors, and friends, so we can continue to be a magnet for top students looking for a high-quality engineering education; internationally recognized faculty looking for an outstanding research environment; and leading-edge industries looking for a key partner. Here are some ways you can help:

  • Student scholarships and support for student programs, including study abroad, undergraduate research, and entrepreneurship programs. These philanthropic gifts ensure that we can recruit and retain the very best undergraduate and graduate students, and provide them with a rigorous and engaging education. The UWM Engineering Excellence Scholarship, for example, is made possible thanks to generous annual donations and supports high-achieving students in our programs.
  • Endowed chairs, professorships, and fellowships that allow us to attract and retain world-class faculty who enhance our research profile, enrich our students’ experiences, and accelerate regional economic development. For example, generous philanthropic support from Johnson Controls Inc. established the Johnson Controls Endowed Professorship in Energy Storage Research. This statewide partnership between UWM, UW-Madison, and Johnson Controls fosters innovative, collaborative, and internationally recognized research in the area of energy storage devices.
  • State-of-the-art equipment, new labs, and upgrades for existing labs—all designed to give our scientists and future engineers the tools they need to succeed. Software licenses donated by ANSYS, Inc. for CEAS’s Institute of Industrial Innovation, for example, give our faculty and students engineering simulations that transform their research.

Will or Other Estate Plan
To learn more about including UWM in your will or other estate plan, visit our Planned Giving website.
Stock or Other Appreciated Securities
Gifts of publicly traded securities that have appreciated in value allow you to avoid capital gains taxes, while also receiving a tax deduction for your gift. UWM benefits by selling the stock without paying taxes on the gain, and you benefit from knowing that your contribution is larger than it would have been as a cash gift.

Please send (or ask your broker to send) the UWM stock gift form to the UWM Foundation prior to transferring the securities, to make sure you receive proper acknowledgement for your gift.
