The UWM School of Education (SOE) is changing the landscape of teaching and learning.
As the largest teacher preparation program in Wisconsin, SOE is crucial for training professionals to meet the growing spectrum of student needs in today’s classrooms.
Through ongoing research, innovative programming, and community partnerships, we are leading the way in early childhood education, higher education administration, adult education, counseling psychology, and more. We are the only institution in the state offering a doctoral degree in urban education, and our unique expertise is routinely tapped locally and nationally.
Classrooms are a kaleidoscope of ethnicity, religion, culture, economics, and abilities, and we are experts at identifying and nurturing culturally aware, compassionate, and highly skilled future teachers. We continually innovate, evaluate, and disseminate information to improve upon current practices in all areas of education. School districts throughout the region are overwhelmingly enthusiastic supporters of our graduates.
Many SOE students also juggle at least one job, in addition to caring for children or elderly adults. They may be the first in their families to pursue a college education or a graduate degree. They have the drive to succeed, but many have pressing obligations that may create barriers to their academic success.
What to Support
The School of Education invites alumni and friends to make a philanthropic investment that will help us prepare the next generation of educators.
To increase student retention and ensure degree completion. In addition to providing rigorous preparation for new teachers from a variety of backgrounds, we strive to help experienced teachers complete advanced degrees and return to their classrooms in a timely manner. For example, the Milwaukee State Teachers College (MSTC) Scholarship Fund—an endowed fund established by alumni of the MSTC Class of 1941, and now supported by other alumni and friends—has provided generous scholarships to more than 100 SOE undergraduates since the fund’s creation in 2001. Thanks to these awards, MSTC Scholars may spend less time working in outside jobs and more time focusing on their studies—and they will likely graduate with a lower debt burden.
To establish “forever funds” that will attract and retain world-class faculty members who can enrich our students’ experiences and enhance SOE’s research profile.
Funding to Ensure Research Excellence
To broaden the discovery and dissemination of innovative approaches to teaching and learning. Faculty research can transform current teaching methods and, thus, enhance classrooms in Milwaukee and beyond. For example, our studies of partnerships between the Milwaukee Public Schools, parents, and community groups have shown a clear impact on students’ growth as young readers.

Stock or Other Appreciated Securities
Gifts of publicly traded securities that have appreciated in value allow you to avoid capital gains taxes, while also receiving a tax deduction for your gift. UWM benefits by selling the stock without paying taxes on the gain, and you benefit from knowing that your contribution is larger than it would have been as a cash gift.
Please send (or ask your broker to send) the UWM stock gift form to the UWM Foundation prior to transferring the securities, to make sure you receive proper acknowledgement for your gift.
