Annual Winter Hike on the Bog

January 29, 2017 @ 1:30 pm - 4:30 pm

Sponsored by the Friends of Cedarburg Bog

Ice Conditions as of Friday, 1/27/2017

  • Conditions may change by Sunday, 1/29.  We still don’t know where we will hike on Sunday.  At this point it looks unlikely that we will go far into the Bog.
  • We will have a very nice hike planned even if we can’t go out on the Bog.
  • To the extent that we do go into the Bog the ice will most likely not be as slick as previously predicted because of the recent snow.
  • All hikers must be willing to accept the risk of falling, regardless of the hike.

Ice Conditions as of Monday, 1/23/2017

  • This information may be updated by the end of the week, as conditions may change by Sunday, 1/29.  However, it is not supposed to get cold until Friday, so we probably won’t know where we can hike until Sunday.
  • We will have a very nice hike planned even if we can’t go out on the Bog.
  • There may be solid, safe ice all the way to Long, and Donut Lakes; but if there is, it is likely to be very slick.  We do not recommend hiking on the ice without “Gripons”, or ice cleats.
  • Friends of Cedarburg Bog will have Gripons available for sale for $16/pair, cash or check.
  • If the ice is safe, but very slick, we will also offer another nice hike for those who do not feel comfortable on the slick ice.
  • All hikers must be willing to accept the risk of falling, regardless of the hike.

Winter is a great time to explore the Cedarburg Bog. Field Station Director, Jim Reinartz will lead the annual hike into the heart of the Bog if the Bog is solidly frozen and the ice is safe. This is a 4-mile hike, and weather and/or snow and ice conditions can make this hike challenging. In the past we have hiked in bitter cold, on a warm day with wet slush over the ice, in deep snow, with no snow at all on very slick ice, and when we are lucky, with a little snow over solid ice. If the Bog is not solidly frozen, we will still take a hike in the uplands.

Bog hikers must be willing to accept the risk associated with this hike off-trail in the Bog. There is always an unavoidable risk of tripping and falling. Glasses are always a good safety measure to avoid getting poked in the eye.

No dogs, Please!

Annual Friends of the Cedarburg Bog Potluck Chili Supper
Following the winter hike at 4:30 pm

You don’t have to get chilly to eat chili! Hikers and non-hikers are welcome to celebrate winter in the Bog. The Friends of the Cedarburg Bog will provide the chili and beverages; if you can, bring a dish to share.

Friends of the Cedarburg Bog suggested donation for Hike and Potluck – $5

Please register at the Friends of the Cedarburg Bog website (click on the Events tab). You can also call (262) 675-6844 or email fieldstn@uwm.edu to make a reservation for the hike, supper, or both!
