Dually Admitted Students

Undergraduate Dual

Students admitted in this category are required to enroll in at least 6 credits of English for Academic Purposes (EAP) courses, including one reading/writing course and one listening/speaking course. Students with dual admission can also register for up to 6 credits in (non-EAP) academic courses. A student with dual admission cannot carry more than 12 credits overall.

Applicants must send TOEFL scores from ETS electronically. UWM’s school code for TOEFL is 1473. TOEFL scores cannot be more than 2 years old. Applicants must also mail an official IELTS score report to the International Admissions Office. IELTS scores cannot be more than 2 years old.

Students can pass out of Dual Admission status by meeting one of the following criteria:

  1. Successfully completion of a dual pathway program in UWM’s ESL program; or,
  2. Submission of a TOEFL score or an IELTS score that meets the score range for regular admission

UWM IEP Recommendation for Undergraduate Dual Admission

Full time students in the UWM Intensive English Program can be recommended for dual admission at the undergraduate level. A student must meet the following criteria for undergraduate dual recommendation:

  1. Be a full time student in the UWM Intensive English Program (IEP)
  2. Place in the B2 level in all classes for a minimum of 8 weeks
  3. Achieve 75% or better on each of the B2 student learning outcomes in all classes

The B2 level is the highest level in the UWM IEP curriculum. The IEP uses the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR).

Graduate Dual

Dual admission (also referred to by the UWM Graduate School as admission with English deficiency): Students admitted in this category are eligible to enroll in six credits of academic coursework and are also required to enroll in an EAP course (credit or non-credit). You must demonstrate your English language proficiency by submitting a TOEFL score or an IELTS score that meets the score range for regular admission within three semesters of initial enrollment at UWM.

UWM ESL Programs Graduate Dual Credit Courses

Dually admitted graduate students are required to enroll every semester in one of the following EAP credit courses until they meet the requirements for full time admission at UWM. Contact ESL Programs for help determining which class you should take.

EAP 420: Advanced Reading, Writing, and Grammar Tune-Up for Internationals (4 U credits)

Refinement of advanced undergraduate and graduate students’ language control; extensive reading, writing, and contextualizing grammar; focus on American academic expectations.  Intensive individualized conferences.

EAP 435:  Advanced Listening, Speaking, and Notetaking Skills for Internationals (4 U credits)

Refinement of advanced undergraduate and graduate students’ listening and speaking skills and pronunciation.  Focus on American academic expectations.  Intensive individualized conferences.
