The MA degree requires students to complete a minimum of 30 credits as described in the Graduate Student Handbook. Students in the MA program who wish to enter the PhD program should discuss their plans early with both their advisor and the Plan B Coordinator.
The PhD requires 54 credits (18 courses) beyond the BA with no more than 27 credits earned at the master’s level, as described in the Graduate Student Handbook PhD Requirements.
Students holding a master’s degree from other institutions, and some students who have an MA from UWM in other areas, must take the Academic Review within six weeks of completing 12 credit hours.
Although they will work with a number of professors, students choose a major professor who advises and supports them in their course of study, academic interests, and writing of the dissertation.

Graduate Grievance Procedures
Federal law and UWM policy require programs and departments to have procedures for graduate students to appeal academic decisions such as grades or scholastic standing. These procedures ensure the protection of students’ rights. These pages serve as a reference on procedures for graduate student academic appeals.
