Colleagues and Friends,

I hope this update finds you enjoying a new beginning of some kind. Here at UWM’s College of Engineering & Applied Science, our academic year has begun, a reminder that our students stand on the threshold of personal, unprecedented moments of discovery in coursework, internships, and research. It is an exciting time of year for many.

This year, 206 freshmen, 135 transfer students, 105 new graduate students and 33 inaugural students to our Biomedical Engineering Undergraduate Degree Program have joined us at a time when we, as a college, are heading up in many ways.

Heading up: reputation

Last year, we took a large leap forward on U.S. News & World Report’s ranking of the nation’s best graduate engineering programs. The University’s R1 status and the contribution our College made to that designation is another key indicator of our elevating reputation based on the great work of our faculty, staff, and students. These advances give us momentum to build on.

Heading up: student opportunities

The College’s new undergraduate degree program in biomedical engineering opened its doors this fall.  The size of the inaugural class reinforces our hopes for the success of this program.

Heading up: research activity

Last fiscal year, faculty members were awarded just shy of $7M (from 73 new awards spanning more than 30 funding organizations). With this momentum, we have a bright future ahead to advance research to benefit our students, our partners, and our society.

As our College moves into a new academic year, we look ahead with excitement for the future. We are constantly reminded how important the engineering profession is and how critical the College’s research and education mission is. We serve in a vital role not just for our students but also for our society at large. It is a tremendous responsibility, which we gladly accept. As we start our next 50 years as a College, we remain focused on being true to our mission and living up to that responsibility. We are honored to have you as alumni, partners, and friends, and we appreciate your past support of the College and our mission and look forward to that support continuing to strengthen even further in the future.

Best,
Brett
