College of Engineering & Applied Science Summer Math Prep Program
The College of Engineering & Applied Science (CEAS) Summer Math Prep Program is an online tool that you can utilize to assess and enhance your math skills prior to retaking your math placement test. We strongly encourage anyone who received a letter regarding the College of Engineering & Applied Science Summer Math Prep Program to utilize this opportunity to prepare for a retest with the hope of earning a higher math placement.
What does your placement mean? You received the invitation because when you took the UW System placement test you placed at a level lower than Calculus 1. Calculus 1 is the first required course in the engineering curriculum.
Why should you retest? A placement prior to Calculus 1 may prevent you from enrolling in Engineering and Computer Science major-specific courses in the fall. This placement will require you to take additional courses that are prerequisite courses to your major courses. Additionally, testing at a level prior to Math 231-Calculus 1 has the potential to delay the time of completion for your degree.
If you received an Engineering Excellence Scholarship, the scholarship requires recipients to enroll in Math 231 (Calculus 1) or higher by fall 2017. Therefore, your current placement exam results disqualify you from receiving the scholarship.
How does the College of Engineering & Applied Science Summer Math Prep Program Work? The College of Engineering & Applied Science Summer Math Prep Program is completed through an online, self-paced program called ALEKS. After you complete the online registration and pay the $25 fee, you will take an online math assessment. This assessment will direct you to the areas where you need to improve. You will be provided with online review materials and practice problems to strengthen your skill set. Because the program is online, you can begin the program when it is convenient for you but we recommend starting the testing portion of the program before July 5, 2017 to allow enough time to prepare before retesting.

Retest Information The College of Engineering & Applied Science Summer Math Prep Program UW System retest date is scheduled for Thursday, August 10, 2017 at 1:30 p.m. at UW-Milwaukee. You will need to register by August 1, 2017 to retest by visiting: testregistration.uwm.edu system.
How do AP credits factor into your math placement scores? AP scores may allow you to take Calculus in fall 2017. A score of a 4 or 5 on the Calculus AB test will allow you to register for Calculus 2 in Fall 2017. A score of a 4 or 5 on the Calculus BC test will allow you to register for Calculus 3 in Fall 2017. Many AP test results are not available until July 2017.
Will this affect your attendance at New Student Orientation (NSO)? No! Please register and attend your NSO as soon as you are eligible. You will have the opportunity to change your math course after NSO if you place higher when you retest.
