College’s Top Supporter Meets Student Scholarship Recipients

Recent graduates share impact of scholarships

In October, Avi Shaked (’80 BS Electrical Engineering) lunched with many of the 103 engineering students who have received between $1,000 and $5,500 in scholarships this academic year from the Avi Shaked and Babs Waldman, M.D. Engineering Excellence Scholarship. The fund supports more students than any philanthropically funded scholarship awarded through the university and is designed to support students throughout their undergraduate years.

At the lunch, students had a chance to meet and thank Shaked, CEO and owner of Onward Technologies. “I couldn’t do this without you,” one student told him.

“It’s incredible what you have done for us,” said another.

Shaked—who has been selected to be UWM’s December commencement speaker—benefitted from scholarships when he was a UWM student and wanted to give others the same advantage while also rewarding students for performance. Since the couple’s scholarship was established, an engineering degree from UWM has become more accessible.

“We don’t know who the next great innovator will be, but we feel the need to support students who wouldn’t otherwise have such opportunities for success,” the couple previously told UWM.
