Lunch with SOE Graduate Students

On Friday, I had lunch with a graduate student and Jeremy Page. I invited graduate students from every department to have lunch and share their experiences. It was a very productive and insightful luncheon. We learned a lot about what attracts students as well as what we can do to improve.

JACARRIE’S KICKS FOR KIDS

Since 2016, UWM has been active sponsor of the ‘Jacarrie’s Kicks for Kids‘ Program. The program, started by UWM School of Education alum Jacarrie Carr, collects new and used shoes during the spring and summer on campus. The shoes are then distributed to Milwaukee kids/families in August as part of a ‘back to school’ celebration.

The School of Education bin is strategically placed on the first floor of Enderis Hall. Our current campus sponsors include the School of Education, the Golda Meier Library, the Pi Lambda Theta Education Honor Society, The College of Health Sciences and the College of Nursing. For more information on the program contact Rob Longwell-Grice at robert@uwm.edu

NEW ADVISOR “WHO AM I?” – TYREE BOLDEN

This week we are featuring Tyree Bolden, new advisor in the Office of Student Services.

School of Education Advisor, Tyree Bolden.

I was born and raised here in Milwaukee, WI. Besides Wisconsin, I’ve also lived in Minneapolis (MN) for five years, Chicago (IL) for two years, Las Cruces (NM) for three years. I currently live in Mukwonago.

I have one brother who is 5 years younger than I am and our birthdays are exactly 1 week apart. I have a 2-year old son who keeps me very busy when I am at home, but I enjoy being able to interact and play with him. He enjoys spending time outdoors and likes to play basketball.

I also have a step-daughter who is 14 and heading into High School next fall, so that should be exciting. She enjoys playing basketball, softball and surfing (when in California). She hopes to attend college in California and would like to play basketball at the college-level.

My family and I also have a 3-year old brindle English Bulldog who looks like a small tiger. He loves to lounge around the house (especially during the winter) and he doesn’t like to go on long walks. In fact, he usually gets into the ‘downward dog’ yoga position whenever we put his lease on him and are getting ready to go on a walk around the neighborhood.

A fun fact about me is that I attended the University of Minnesota and was a varsity student-athlete on the Men’s Basketball team for 4 years. In 2003, our team made it to the Final Four of the National Invitational Tournament and had the chance to play in Madison Square Garden in New York City.
