UWM Student Awarded Boren Scholarship

Madeline Brancel, a Global Studies major and a Peer Advisor in the CIE Study Abroad Office, has been awarded the prestigious David L. Boren Scholarship (www.borenawards.org). Sponsored by the National Security Education Program (NSEP), the Boren awards are a major federal initiative designed to build a broader and more qualified pool of U.S. citizens with foreign language and international skills.

As part of this program Madeline will be participating in an intensive Portuguese language intensive program during the summer, and will spend the fall semester living and studying in Mozambique.  Madeline will also spend at least one year working for the U.S. government after graduation as part of the program.

Madeline has previously studied in Lisbon, Portugal, where she achieved a high degree of fluency in Portuguese. While in Portugal she also secured an internship with the Consular Section of the U.S. Embassy. This experience solidified for Madeline her desire to continue her focus on living and working abroad.
