How the Study Abroad Process Works

Students may attend one of our Study Abroad 101 information sessions, our bi-annual Study Abroad Fair, use the Study Abroad website, and/or visit the CIE Study Abroad Office to meet with a Peer Advisor on a walk-in basis to learn more about various program options.

Once students decide on a program, they submit an application online. Spring, UWinteriM and spring break applications are due on October 1st; summer, fall and year-long applications are due on March 1st. Deadlines are posted on our website and on the individual program pages.

Students are notified of a decision about their application in mid-October (for spring, UWinteriM and spring break), and mid-March (for fall, yearlong and summer).

Students deciding to accept the offer to study abroad must commit to their program via their CIE Study Abroad Office online application and agree to pay their study abroad fees.

Students must attend a mandatory pre-departure orientation in November-December (for spring, UWinteriM and spring break) or April-May (for all other terms). Dates for the orientations are posted on students’ online application pages months in advance.

While overseas, students are encouraged to stay in contact with the CIE Study Abroad and are also responsible to UWM Student Conduct Code.

After returning, students are notified when their official grades are received from their term abroad. The CIE Study Abroad Office collaborates with the Registrar’s Office to post the students’ grades to PAWS.
