The following is a list of all possible Chinese courses available to students. Please refer to the UWM Schedule of Classes for courses offered during a specific semester.

CHINESE 101 - First Semester Chinese (5 units; U)
Beginning Chinese for students with no previous knowledge of the language. Prereq: none.
CHINESE 102 - Second Semester Chinese (5 units; U)
Continuation of Chinese 101(Linguis 121). Prereq: Chinese 101(Linguis 121)(NP). Generates L&S credit for demonstrated equivalent preparation (4 retro cr).
CHINESE 150 - Contemporary Chinese Society and Culture (3 units; U)
Economics, politics, society, people, culture, and the environment in contemporary Chinese life. Representation, interpretations, and practices of Chinese cultures, traditions, and customs. In English. Prereq: none.
CHINESE 160 - A Taste of China: Learning Chinese Culture and Society through Cuisine (3 units; U)
Cultural, historical, geographical, and sociological influences on Chinese cuisine. Prereq: none.
CHINESE 192 - First-Year Seminar: (3 units; U)
Specific humanities topics are announced in the Schedule of Classes each time the class is offered. Open only to freshmen. Students may earn cr in just one L&S First-Year Sem (course numbers 192, 193, 194). Prereq: none.
CHINESE 197 - Study Abroad: (1-12 units; U)
Designed to enable students studying language abroad to receive course credit at appropriate level. May be retaken w/chg in topic. Prereq: acceptance in Study Abroad Prog.
CHINESE 199 - Independent Study (1-3 units; U)
Independent work under supervision of faculty or academic staff member. For further information, consult dept chair. May be retaken to 6 cr max. Prereq: 2.5 GPA; writ cons instr, dept chair & asst dean for SAS.
CHINESE 200 - Chinese Calligraphy (3 units; U)
History, development, aesthetics, and appreciation of Chinese calligraphy; in-class, hands-on practice in producing calligraphy; aspects of the fascinating cultural heritage of China. Prereq: none.
CHINESE 201 - Third Semester Chinese (5 units; U)
Continuation of Chinese 102(Linguis 122). Prereq: Chinese 102(Linguis 122)(NP) or equiv.Generates L&S credit for demonstrated equivalent preparation (8 retro cr).
CHINESE 202 - Fourth Semester Chinese (5 units; U)
Continuation of Chinese 201(Linguis 221). Prereq: Chinese 201(Linguis 221)(NP) or equiv. Generates L&S credit for demonstrated equivalent preparation (12 retro cr).
CHINESE 277 - Chinese Discussion Section: (1-2 units; U)
Discussion in Chinese, designed to broaden perspectives, improve language skills. Offered in conjunction w/courses in other disciplines (Anthro, Hist, Pol Sci, etc). May be retaken w/chg in topic to 6 cr max. Prereq: Chinese 202(Linguis 223)(P) or cons instr.
CHINESE 289 - Internship in Chinese, Lower Division (1-6 units; U)
Application of basic principles of Chinese in business, organizational, educational, political, or other appropriate setting. May be retaken to 6 cr max. Prereq: 2.50 gpa; cons supervising faculty member.
CHINESE 296 - UROP Apprenticeship (1-3 units; U)
Undergraduate research participation in a project developed with a supervising member of the faculty or staff. One credit for 45 hrs research. May be retaken to 9 cr max in any combination of UROP apprenticeship courses. Not open to jrs & srs. Prereq: acceptance to UROP; prior or conc reg in UROP seminar.
CHINESE 297 - Study Abroad: (1-12 units; U)
Designed to enroll students in UWM sponsored program before course work levels, content, and credits are determined and/or in specially prepared program course work. May be retaken w/chg in topic. Prereq: acceptance for Study Abroad Prog.
CHINESE 299 - Ad Hoc: (1-6 units; U)
Course created expressly for offering in a specified enrollment period. Requires only dept & assoc dean approval. In exceptional circumstances, can be offered in one add'l sem. May be retaken w/chg in topic. Prereq: none; add'l prereqs may be assigned to specific topic.
CHINESE 301 - Fifth Semester Chinese (4 units; U)
Continuation of Chinese 202(Linguis 223). Prereq: Chinese 202(Linguis 223)(P) or equiv. Generates L&S credit for demonstrated equivalent preparation (16 retro cr).
CHINESE 302 - Sixth Semester Chinese (4 units; U)
Continuation of Chinese 301(Linguis 321). Prereq: Chinese 301(Linguis 321)(P) or equiv. Generates L&S credit for demonstrated equivalent preparation (16 retro cr).
CHINESE 320 - Contemporary Chinese Societies through Film (3 units; U)
Film as a context for examining issues in contemporary societies of China and Taiwan; emphasis on development of language proficiency. Prereq: Chinese 202(P) or equiv.
CHINESE 330 - Chinese Language and Culture (3 units; U)
Chinese language and contemporary culture through various forms of media. Prereq: Chinese 202(P).
CHINESE 343 - Chinese Martial Arts Fiction (3 units; U)
Martial arts genre fiction from various periods of Chinese history; analysis of the philosophical and societal factors that shaped the genre. Prereq: jr st or cons instr; completion of OWC-A GER
CHINESE 397 - Study Abroad: (1-12 units; U)

CHINESE 401 - Seventh Semester Chinese (3 units; U)
Continuation of Chinese 302(Linguis 322). Prereq: Chinese 302(Linguis 322)(P). Generates L&S credit for demonstrated equivalent preparation (16 retro cr).
CHINESE 402 - Eighth Semester Chinese (3 units; U)
Continuation of Chinese 401. Prereq: Chinese 401(P). Generates L&S credit for demonstrated equivalent preparation (16 retro cr).
CHINESE 441 - Business Chinese (3 units; U)
Chinese in cultural contexts of actual business situations; commonly-used commercial terms, phrases, sentence patterns, and cultural background. Prereq: Chinese 302(Linguis 322)(P).
CHINESE 489 - Internship in Chinese, Upper Division (1-6 units; U)
Application of basic principles to Chinese in business, organizational, educational, political, or other appropriate setting. One cr earned for academic work based on 40 hrs in internship. May be retaken to 6 cr max. Prereq: jr st; 2.50 gpa; cons supervising faculty member.
CHINESE 497 - Study Abroad: (1-12 units; U)
