Chancellor’s Updates: Giving Thanks and Support in Unsettling Times

Dear Faculty, Staff and Students,

In the aftermath of a prolonged and contentious election season, I have heard from many faculty, staff and students who have questions about what the future holds for them and UWM. Students who represent the wonderful diversity of our campus, especially, have expressed concerns and anxiety about their sense of belonging, their safety and whether federal changes may impact their ability to continue their education with us.

As faculty and staff, we have a great opportunity to bridge and cross divides in our daily interactions with students, with one another and more broadly in our communities. And for that, I am truly thankful.

Without being partisan or political, I encourage us all to acknowledge the distress and concerns, be supportive, make our students feel welcome, and thank them for attending UWM.

We are a research university and a knowledge source. Our role in society and academic freedom are being questioned in the current climate. I would argue that our roles are more needed and critical than ever. This is an important time for us to answer questions – about the fragility of democracy, the power of an open mind, and rising above toxic rhetoric. While we cannot control current events in our country, we can control how we respond on our campus. We can and need to have meaningful discourse and challenging conversations, even though we do not need to agree with one another.

What will be most helpful is to double-down on what we represent: opportunity. Nothing is more important that the doors we open for our students.

You have my appreciation and gratitude for all that you do to lift up our students. None of what UWM stands for would be possible without your talents, commitment and influence. Once more, I cannot thank you enough.

The week ahead provides a brief pause to collect our thoughts, catch our breath and rejuvenate before we head into the final few weeks of the fall semester. I offer my very best wishes to you and those close to you for a safe and happy holiday.

Best regards,
