Dear Students, Faculty, and Staff,

On behalf of everyone at UWM, I would like to congratulate Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs Michael Laliberte on being named President of the State University of New York at Delhi, starting in mid-July 2016.  Michael’s last day at UWM will be in early July.

I am pleased to announce that Associate Vice Chancellor Jim Hill will assume the role of Interim Senior Student Affairs Officer (SSAO), effective July 2016.  Jim will provide oversight and leadership for the Division of Student Affairs until a formal search for the permanent SSAO is concluded; we expect that search to be launched in the next year.  Jim is the ideal person to head the division during this period, given his 20+ years at UWM, including past experience leading Student Affairs on an interim basis and as Dean of Students.

In addition, to continue Student Affairs’ critical leadership role in the Chancellor’s Enrollment Management Action Team (CEMAT), Director of the Office of Undergraduate Admissions Brian Troyer will assume Michael’s role as CEMAT co-chair, a post shared with Provost Johannes Britz.  Brian is currently a member of CEMAT and has been working closely with the Provost and his staff during the last academic year on enrollment issues related to schools and colleges.

Regarding the future of the division, and in light of the budget challenges that UWM is facing, we will work on identifying how the Division of Student Affairs and other campus units can work together effectively, similar to reviews that are occurring in schools, colleges and other divisions.  The Division of Student Affairs will remain intact, and, given its critical role in supporting students, the SSAO will be a member of the Chancellor’s Cabinet.  In the future we will not operate with a Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs, which is similar to the structure at UW-Madison.

I extend my appreciation to Michael for almost six years of dedicated service to our campus and his clear commitment to UWM students.  I also thank Jim and Brian for their willingness to take on their respective responsibilities during this transition period, and the division staff and student employees for their continued dedication to UWM and the Division of Student Affairs.

Best regards,
