Lubar Alumni Honored at UWM Alumni Association Awards Evening

Congratulations to the inspirational Lubar School of Business alumni who were recognized at the 2017 UWM Alumni Association Awards Evening, which celebrates excellence and achievement among UWM’s 181,000 alumni!


Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award
Michael Gifford, Executive MBA ‘03
President & CEO
AIDS Resource Center of Wisconsin

Michael Gifford envisions a world without AIDS. Gifford is the President and CEO of the AIDS Resource Center of Wisconsin (ARCW), an organization he joined in 1993. ARCW provides a multitude of integrated services to patients with HIV, including social services and medical, dental, and mental health clinics, and Mike guided its growth from a small organization in downtown Milwaukee to a national model that is being replicated in communities across the country. At UWM, Mike is a proponent of the Executive MBA program in the Lubar School of Business, and has been featured in its Forefront Speaker Series.

Scott Conger has more than 25 years of professional experience in Milwaukee, focusing on corporate finance, investments, and risk management for institutions in the investment services industry. His strong analytical skills, coupled with an ability to collaborate with colleagues at every level, have spurred his success. Scott applies these same assets to his volunteer roles as past president of the Lubar School of Business Alumni Chapter and on the Executive Committee of the UWM Alumni Association Board of Trustees. Believing a strong network of alumni is essential for a quality university, Scott works to bring the more than 35,000 Lubar School alumni together to create lifelong connections with UWM.

Born and raised in Milwaukee, James Phelps established JCP Construction as a well-respected name with local developers. James and his two brothers (also partners) have been recognized for excellence by the clients and communities they serve, including at the Milwaukee Business Journal’s Central City Business Awards. Working on high-profile projects throughout Milwaukee, including the new Milwaukee Bucks Arena, James is a LEED Accredited Professional. He is also recognized for being an active and positive presence in Milwaukee by the Metropolitan Milwaukee Association of Commerce, the African American Chamber of Commerce of Wisconsin, and the Association of General Contractors.

Cornerstone Macro

A member of the Portfolio Insights Team at Cornerstone Macro, a Wall Street investment management firm, Kevin Kiefer performs sophisticated quantitative investment research and has excelled in this highly competitive and complex world. He earned the remarkable opportunity to work as part of a group headed by Francois Trahan, ranked as the top investment strategist for nine of the last ten years by Institutional Investor magazine. Kevin also maintains close connections with his former professors at UWM, and has made charitable contributions to the Investment Management Program, supporting travel costs for the annual student trips to financial centers in New York and London.

In eight short years, Andrew Metz rose from an entry level position to Vice President of Small- to Mid-Sized Business Sales at Zywave Insurance Broker Software. His hard work, desire for continuous learning and improvement, generosity, and humility earn him recognition as a catalyst for growth within the organization. Andrew inspires and encourages the people he works with to attain their own personal best. His willingness to share the early lessons learned in his business career, as well as his public speaking skills, have resulted in regular speaking requests from UWM’s Lubar School of Business, Marquette University, and local high schools.

Just three years after receiving her degree in Finance and the Investment Management Certificate, Magdalena Rocha Ocampo earned one of the country’s best positions for a young professional in her field with a prestigious Wall Street investment firm. She currently serves as a Portfolio Strategy Team member at Cornerstone Macro, a firm known for its superior macroeconomic and financial market research. Magdalena demonstrates professionalism, maturity and leadership in her position, and also “gives back” to UWM — she made her first charitable gift just months after she started her career.

Brandon Tschacher, BBA ‘08

Thrivent Financial

Brandon Tschacher has been deeply involved in creating and growing impactful groups and initiatives in Milwaukee. He currently serves as Director of Marketing for Thrivent Financial, a Fortune 500 wealth management fund company. Brandon is the youngest member of the Advisory Board of Directors for the Salvation Army of Milwaukee County, and is one of the founders of their emerging professionals group, Echelon, which was called ”The Face of Mobilizing the Next Generation” by Milwaukee Magazine in 2015. He was also instrumental in developing young professional groups for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and Historic Milwaukee.
