Cell and Molecular Biology Option Degree Requirements

The Bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences with a  Cell and Molecular Biology option requires 34 credits that include Bio Sci 150, Bio Sci 152, and 26 credits in courses at or above the 300 level. Required and elective courses for this option are listed below. Additional requirements include courses in natural sciences, humanities, formal reasoning, international awareness, and research. As a Letters & Sciences student, you must also meet foreign language competencies (which may be satisfied if enough coursework was taken during high school).

It is important to understand your Letters & Science Degree Requirements because they will differ depending on whether you choose to obtain a Bachelor of Science (BS) or a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree.

Because there are many pathways to the degree depending on your particular circumstances, it is very important to meet with your Letters & Science and your Biological Sciences advisors least once a semester to make sure you are on-track. Some classes may count towards more than one requirement and with early planning, you can save yourself time and money.

Additional BioSci Requirements

No more than eight (8) credits in 100-level courses in Biological Sciences may be applied toward the major.

Students may not combine Bio Sci 150, 202, and 203 for more than 9 credits toward the major.

A combined limit of 6 credits in Bio Sci 290, 489, 695, 697, 698, 699, Honors 686, 687, and 689 counts toward the major.

Students must select additional Cell and Molecular Biology courses to reach a total of 18 credits beyond the core courses and a total of 26 upper-division (numbered 300 and above) credits. At least 15 upper-division credits must be taken in residence at UWM.

Students must complete four (4) laboratory courses

Math Requirement

  • Math 211, 221, or 231 for a Bachelor of Science.
  • Math 105 or equivalent for a Bachelor of Arts.


Physics Requirement

  • Physics 120/122 or Physics 209/210, with at least one semester of Physics lab (121 or above); or Physics 219/220.
  • Physics 123 is strongly recommended for students who do not take Physics 219/220.


Chemistry Requirement

  • Chem 102, 104 - General Chemistry and Qualitative Analysis
  • Chem 343, 344, 345 - One-Year Sequence of Organic Chemistry with Lab


GPA Requirements

Students must attain a GPA of 2.500 in Biological Sciences courses attempted at UWM. In addition, students must attain a GPA of at least 2.500 in all major credits attempted, including any transfer work.
